Chip Cards Provide Extra Security
From the beginning of 2010, Horizon will be rolling out new chip card technology as Visa cards start to expire or when new cards are ordered.
A new level of protection
Like the magnetic stripe on the back of current cards, the embedded microchip stores your account details. But unlike the magnetic stripe, the microchip is virtually impossible to copy, giving you an unrivalled level of protection against counterfeiting, card skimming and other fraudulent use.
A new way to use the chip card
Instead of swiping your card, you may be asked to insert rather than swipe the new card in chip compatible card terminals. Your card remains in the terminal throughout the transaction and confirms your identity by requesting your PIN.
For the time being, the new chip cards can still be used in traditional swipe EFTPOS terminals with PIN or signature approval. You can also use your Visa Card at ATMs.
Travelling overseas? Remember your PIN
Chip technology is already in use in many countries around the world so if you’re travelling overseas you’ll need to memorise and use your PIN as this is the preferred, safer option for most merchants.
Be aware
Remember to shield the PIN pad when you’re entering your PIN.
Helping you remember your PIN
As you know, you should never give your PIN to anyone. If you have trouble remembering your PIN or you can’t remember it at all, we have PIN change terminals available at most branches.
If you’d like more information on the new chip cards, please contact your local branch.
